Culture Corner
• When Americans meet and speak, there is about a 2—4 feet distance between them. However, if you watch a Japanese speaking to an American you will see him moving towards the American, which makes the American move backwards. So, Asians and Americans sometimes misunderstand each other, the Americans thinking of the Asians as "too familiar" and the Asians thinking that the Americans are "too cold", "too formal". • The great topic of conversation in Britain is the weather. In America the main topic between strangers is trying to find the geographical link. • The British people like to speak about their home, children, family, pets, hobbies, holidays, sports, the English language. • It is not considered good manners to talk about money in Britain and the USA. You never tell anyone how much you earn or will earn.
